Vitaro: a bright future for silver generation cooking.

Summary

Vitaro relies on thoughtful design to create a compact, well lit kitchen work space that fits in a smaller apartment unit, and which sharply reduces the amount of movement required to prepare food.  Vitaro’s high technology lighting system is also a major benefit for those whose eyesight is deteriorating.

Objective

Recognizing the degradation of muscles and eyes as people age, Team Vitaro set out to condense the amount of activity a silver generation member needs to function in the kitchen, revamp the concept of kitchen workflow, and provide a brighter workspace.

The Problem

Julie, 67, likes working in the kitchen, but as she has aged she desires more time for herself.  What’s more, degradation of her muscle and motor functions mean working in the kitchen is quite a chore. Also, the lack of organization in her kitchen makes cooking a hassle, and her eyes are not as good as they used to be.

The Solution: Vitaro – a compact Kitchen System Unit

Vitaro offers convenient, easy-to-reach storage of plates, bowels, and cooking utensils. It also provides excellent lighting, a key consideration in any kitchen, as well as induction cook tops, a safer way to cook for elderly people.

Benefits for the silver generation

After sixty years of age, eyes are weaker, muscles less supple, and flexibility much reduced. Vitaro reduces the amount of movement needed to function in the kitchen, provides ample lighting, and keeps often-used items near at hand.

  • Elevating storage rack: Vitaro stores plates, bowls, and utensils in an elevator cabinet silo below the table top. With the press of a button the cabinet rises up from the table top, making it easy to access its contents. The storage system can also be customized to store cooking ingredients.
  • OLED lighting: Vitaro’s smart lighting system responds to user activity, lighting up when somebody enters the room, and brightening significantly when cooking tasks are performed – no need to find the light switch in the dark.
  • Induction: Induction is the safest and most precise cooking technology available.

Julie (the target consumer) and Vitaro

Julie loves to cook, but is territorial about her kitchen.  With Vitaro, she does not need assistance in the kitchen, and the counter top’s innovative design reduces the amount she needs to move around when cooking.  It also cuts the amount of work required to prepare and serve meals – providing her with more free time.
